Two fairly short sides by two Swedish crustbomb
droppers, so maybe it’s more of a split 12”, but split hairs over such a
distinction would be like trying to evaluate these bands against one another.
To the untrained ear, both Makabert Fynd and Glöm Da! sound a lot alike. It’s
funny that I am so drawn to one particular drum tone on the Glöm Da! side,
which reminds me of a punchball balloon and is literally all I can focus on
in the course of the tracks in which it can be heard. The group plays raging
D-beat HC, which I wouldn’t go as far as to call “raw” or even “somewhat
cooked” – there’s polish and flourish in there, mostly on the metallic
side of things. Makabert Fynd have a better name, twice as many singers (two
separate vocalists), more songs, and a longer side. Quantitatively they are
the superior band, and they win the battle of this split because of it; with
faster songs, more aggression, they provide a better experience overall. But
the kind of punk who’d buy a record like this wouldn’t really care. They

manifesting themselves as one of the more active bands as far as recording
goes with 3 LPs in not even two years. Plus EPs and splits. And as with all
their releases they maintain a very high level of quality and as far as I'm
concerned this is their best effort yet, alongside the debut 7" and
split with Nice Idiot. Raging, pissed, roaring... fast and furious hardcore
råpunk! The sound is rawer than on their previous LP and the songs have a
more intense approach - a direct hit, leaving nothing standing.

casewrapped gatefold with metallic hot foil stamping. Even though this was
the first official full-length recorded by Paul Speckmann in 1989- backed up
by the soon to be cult line-up of former DEATH STRIKE comrade Chris
Mittleburn on guitar and Bill Schmidt on drums – MASTER were already a
revered name in the underground. Although very few recordings of theirs
existed, as rough sounding as they were, those gems had already achieved
legendary status. Distributed through the tapetrading infamous network by
guys still in their late teens who would soon prove to be as equally
important for the rise of the extreme metal scene such as Shaun Glass (future
BROKEN HOPE and SINDROME), Mick Harris (NAPALM DEATH) or Chuck Schuldiner
(DEATH), they basically single-handed launched the basis of things to come
and for zillions of bands throughout the world to follow. So when the future
German mammoth label NUCLEAR BLAST finally ended up signing the band in 1989,
all they had to was to dig back in the great collection of songs which had
never been properly recorded. Recorded at Solid Sounds in Illinois but mixed
at the already high-profiled Morrisound Studio facility in Tampa Florida by
Scott Burns, it is now available again on vinyl format for the first time in
twenty years, with the usual DOOMENTIA high-standard policy.

In the summer of 1989 Sweden's MERCILESS recorded
their first album "The Awakening". Before that the band had been
doing some demos, the first one "Behind The Black Door" came out in
87. After that demo Kåle left the band and the new singer was Rogga. After
the first record was out, the band played a lot of shows with bands like
Entombed, Dismenber, Count Raven, and also the Brazilian band Sepultura on
their "Beneath The Remains" tour. Merciless' second record
"The Treasures Within" was recorded in '91 but was not relesed
until the year after. Then the drummer was tired of waiting for the record to
be released, so in '92 a new drummer, Peter Stjärnvind (Unanimated/Entombed)
replaced Stefan Carlsson. In the begining of '93 the band did a tour in
Scandinavia together with Entombed. The same year they recorded their third
album, "Unbound" with producer Dan Swanö at his Unisound Studios.
Tired of the lack of support from the record company, Merciless lost the
inspiration to go on. In the start of '94 the band did a show before they
decided to take a long break. However, in '95 they preformed on the Slayer
tribute record "Slaytanic Slaughter" with the song
"Crionics". In '99 the first album was released on Osmose
productions then Merciless were offered to do a lot of shows and started to
rehearse again. After some more successful shows Merciless decided to start
working on a new album. In 2002 they finally entered Dog Pound Studios in Stockholm
Sweden. The band has 10 tracks of fast and aggressive thrash/death metal on
the new album, there are some mid paced moshing passages in some of the songs
but mostly they stick to hard and fast deaththrash with a truely 80s
fashioned production. Recommended if you like Sadus, Pestilence, Death and
early Atheist.

MERCILESS
The treasures within
Sweden is well known for having some of the best
death and thrash metal bands in existence. It seems rather strange that one
of the very best bands to came from Sweden, is very unknown to the vast
majority of fans in these genres. MERCILESS was a band that had surpassed so
many others in terms of aggression. From 1989-1992, there were very few in
the death/thrash subgenre that could compete with this band, besides
Germany's Protector, and the highly underrated band Incubus (later
Oprobrium). Their raw and brutal debut is one of the most intense albums from
the 80's (it was actually recorded in '89, but released in 1990), and in a
similar fashion to Incubus, featured thrash beats played at almost blast-beat
tempos. Their worthy follow-up, The Treasures Within, features a similar
amount of aggression, now with better musicianship and much more technical
guitar work, recalling the more technical period of Death. A much more
deathly Merciless is displayed on The Treasures Within. In contrast to the
raw, brutal, and unrelenting debut, these songs have some added complexity,
and tempo changes. This is very similar to Swallowed In Black from Sadus in
that it preserves the aggression of the debut, with better musicianship, and
more technicality. The Treasure Within shows that the band had the potential
to become quite similar to band like Pestilence, and Death in the technical
death metal genre.. This album as well as the debut are the band's best work
and are highly underrated, but superior in terms of quality to most releases
out there. Sadly the band didn’t quite achieve the level of success and
recognition their peers, like Entombed, and Unleashed. Recommended for anyone
who likes fast Death, Thrash Metal, or just quality metal in general.

the 80s you will ever find! The most interesting features about this album
are probably its lyrical content, usage of synthesizers (a rarity in thrash)
and the overall intensity the band provides. Tschösi (also in the grind
legend FEAR OF GOD!) crazed screaming vocals approach is unique in the genre
as well. Either way, any fan of thrash metal should have this album in any
form possible!

Terror of Quincy features original artwork by Brian "Pushead" Schroeder, with a caricature of Jack Klugman who played the coroner in “Quincy M.E.”, a network TV show, which along with "C.H.I.P.S." represented the mainstream media's reaction to the spread of punk to suburbia in the '80's. "Darby Crash Rides Again" is their 1982 demo and it pretty much
blows most other "hardcore" records clear out of the water.
Granted, the sound is raw (sometimes you can barely hear the drums), but if
you have the "Pick Your King" 7", you should know the songs
anyway. This also includes a few great songs ("Bounce the Rubble",
"All Right", etc.) that Poison Idea never recorded again. The
"Record Collectors Are Pretentious Assholes" EP was released 1984
on "FatalErection" and is still fast hardcore, but not as crazy and
unpredictable as the first EP. The band is trying to write more complex
songs, longer riffs, etc. There's hints of melody and the more standard song
structure that would come later.

Reagan Youth is an American punk band started by
singer Dave Rubinstein (Dave Insurgent) and his friend and guitarist Paul
Bakija in Queens, New York City in early 1980. They have been labeled a peace
punk band, but are more commonly cited as an pivotal band in introducing the
style of hardcore punk to the East Coast punk sce…ne. Their name is a word
play on Hitler Youth. An important group in the New York/New Jersey hardcore
scene, they performed very regularly at CBGB and toured the U.S. extensively,
often with other early punk bands such as the Dead Kennedys, Bad Brains and
Misfits. The Beastie Boys and Rancid, among other significant successful punk
rock and alternative rock groups, have cited Reagan Youth as an influence.
Starting in 1980, they were in existence for almost ten years, but only
managed to release one album during their existence as a band (in 1984):
originally titled Youth Anthems for the New Order, it was rereleased as
Reagan Youth (Vol. 1) by the small independent label New Red Archives in
1989. This album eventually sold 40,000 copies.
